    Ben Taub’s Dr. George Jordan is the first to use the “Jordan Maneuver,” allowing wounds to heal faster with fewer complications.

    Ben Taub is the first hospital to obtain a CT scanner to evaluate head injuries.

  • 1984

    Ben Taub installs advanced systems for anesthetic and respiratory analysis.

  • 1989

    The Thomas Street Health Center is the nation’s first freestanding HIV/AIDS treatment facility.

  • 1996

    LBJ becomes the first hospital in Texas to receive Level III trauma designation.

  • 2018

    LBJ Hospital is among the first to offer robotic da Vinci surgeries that improve safety and reduce recovery time.

    The Harris County Hospital district was created by voter referendum in November 1965.

    Harris Health opens the Martin Luther King Jr. Health Center.

  • 1989

    June 2, LBJ Hospital opens.

  • 1990

    The new Ben Taub Hospital opens and becomes one of only two Level 1 trauma centers in the area.

  • 2001

    NASA astronauts train at LBJ Hospital in preparation for their journey into space. Ben Taub and LBJ Hospitals accept patients from other hospitals during Tropical Storm Allison.

  • 2005

    Harris Health establishes Astrodome Health Center to serve the medical needs of Hurricane Katrina evacuees.

  • 2018

    LBJ Hospital creates Community Farm to combat food insecurity.

  • 2020

    Ben Taub and LBJ hospitals receive Magnet® designation for nursing excellence from the American Nurse Credentialing Center.
